No one expected a Sugar Ray Leonard/Thomas Hearns kind of performance but young amateur boxers turned in several action packed encounters that rivaled that bout and entertained the medium sized crowd when the inaugural, of a two night boxing tournament, dubbed ‘The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA)/Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) Junior’s Boxing Competition, concluded in the compound of the Central Police Station, New Amsterdam, Saturday evening last.
Most of the top gyms competed for honours including Young Achievers (YA), Harpy Eagles (HE), Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Rose Hall Town Jammers (RHTJ), Pocket Rocket (PR) and Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG).
Jaime Kellman (YA) and Malrick Walcott (EBG) set the pace from the very first bout in the 50-54 lbs category when both boxers, unaware that three rounds could be a tiring affair, went after each other from the first bell. In his haste to impress, Kellman threw some wild punches, most of them slaps, and was duly warned by the referee. He managed to correct the error but just could not catch up on Walcott who continued to punch and counterpunch to be declared the 2-1 winner. Consequently, Walcott returned later in the night for a second encounter against Kevin Mullings (HE) but found the determination and grit of his opponent too much to handle and he dropped a 3-0 verdict.
The Keiron Williams (PR)/Troy Armstrong (FYF) duel in the same division was just as entertaining. Williams could hardly wait for the first bell as he rushed into the bout with flailing fists.
Several punches later, Armstrong was on the left side of a mandatory 8 count. He took it in a sportsmanlike manner, bided his time, and returned the favour early in the 2nd round and thereafter, it was a test of will as both pugilists attempted to outgun the other.
Both boxers were clearly tired from the grueling encounter but refused to relinquish the pressure. It was only late in the 3rd round, when Williams rocked Armstrong with 2 roundhouse blows and followed up with several clubbing shots that the distinction was made. The judges concurred and awarded the 3-0 decision to Williams.
However, Williams was not so lucky when he faced Travis Hubbard (HE) later on in the night. The latter boxer employed a two fisted attack that established his dominance, forcing the referee to call a halt to the bout in 18secs of the third stanza.
Junior Henry (FYF) scored the first knockout of the night when he laced Paul Williams (HE) forcing him to back off in their 110-117lbs encounter. Williams did show some resistance but just could not stave off the two fisted mode of attack of his opponent. After one such session, the referee decided to call a halt to the proceedings at 33secs of the third round.
In the other results of the night, 50-54lbs: Clyde Williams (FYF) defeated Quincy Wright (EBG) while Kevon Mullings (HE) proved to be too good for Shemar Bunbury (FYF). Anson Wolfe (HE) also lost to Shaquille Simeon (PR).
95-99lbs: Tefon Green (HE) was too good for Ezekiel Accra (FYF), while Orin Bancroft (HE) lost to Tyron Lashley (RHTJ) when he was disqualified for infringing the rules.
100-104lbs: Melshion Baratt (FYF) and Ramnarine Mohabir fought to a thrilling conclusion with the former boxer earning the 3-0 decision.
Meanwhile, President of the GABA, Steve Ninvalle travelled up to the Ancient County to declare the championships open and witness the action. He urged the boxers to be of exemplary behavior even as they represent their respective gyms.
Mr. Ninvalle was also appreciative of the support rendered by DDL, the main sponsors of the programme, Digicel, the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports provided the transportation for the boxers and received high praise for their input
The coaches’ efforts in the preparation of the boxers were also noticed and came in for high praise while Tournament Director, Terrence Poole, was singled out for his commitment and dedication which was responsible for the successful staging of the tournament. Activities concluded last night and those results appear in tomorrow’s edition.
