Several persons were injured late yesterday afternoon when a speeding route 47 East/West minibus toppled about two times after smashing into another vehicle and landing upside down.
Around 16:30hours the minibus loaded with commuters heading home was travelling east along Evans Street when it came into contact with a white Toyota Raum heading north along Lyng Street. According to those present at the scene and passengers in the minibus, the driver was speeding.
One eyewitness said that the driver, “fly over de road as if he deh pon de race track.” Kaieteur News understands that the minibus driver failed to stop at the intersection of Evans and Lyng and collided with the Raum which onlookers said was moving at a moderate speed.
That eyewitness who refused to be named said that he was sitting on Lyng Street when he saw the bus travelling at a fast rate. On impact, he said the minibus flipped about two times, ending up on its roof.
Candace Rowe, one of the passengers in the bus, said that she was seated in the back seat with her 10-year-old daughter. They were heading home. The woman said right before the accident she was speaking to persons seated next to her about the driver speeding.
The woman said what she remembered was a loud crashing sound and quickly held on to her daughter who suffered minor injuries. The woman said she noticed the conductor and another person, “fly through the bus window,” but it happened so fast. Rowe suffered a broken collar bone and was at the time heading for additional medical attention.
This publication was told that at least two persons suffered broken collar bones. One person had chest and neck injuries, while others had abrasions. Some had fractures, at least one broken arm.
Kaieteur News understands that at least 16 persons, including the driver, were in the minibus. The driver fled the scene as soon as the bus came to a halt.
