12-year-old gives birth at GPHC…
As authorities continue their investigation into the incident where a 12-year-old gave birth over the weekend at the Georgetown Public Hospital, police are searching for a 16-year-old who is said to be the father of the baby.
This publication was told that the young mother and the baby are in good condition but up to press time yesterday remained hospitalized. Reports are that the girl has since indicated to investigators that the father of her child is a 16 year-old from the Region 7 area.
While the police are working on the information provided to them, Knews’ reporters were told that there is very little to work with.
Further, the matter was brought to the attention of the Child Protection Agency (CPA) a while back. Reports are that the girl who gave birth and a few others who are also pregnant were brought to the city under the care of the CPA.
Head of the Agency, Ann Green, told this publication that the teens who are all below the age of 16 were brought to the city because they were determined to be high risk pregnancy cases.
Meanwhile, Green is concerned over the increasing number of teen mothers coming out of the hinterland areas. She added that while her agency is working with very little human resources, recently they had launched a campaign to deal with this issue in the hinterland location.
“This, what we are seeing is a culture in most Amerindian communities. Girls become sexually active at a very early age and most males from these communities commit carnal knowledge.”
It is for this reason Green said they have been hosting ‘re-education’ programmes in the most vulnerable communities with the leaders.
The Agency, Green said, has also been trying to promote the ‘Tell Me’ campaign in schools.
