Executives forging ahead with plans for schools championship
It read like a script from a past tournament, but it was actually the Open Championships played at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands when Abigail McDonald survived a 4th round loss to James Krakowsky, but rebounded with 5 wins and a positive spread of 827 to cart off the spoils when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Open Championship concluded yesterday morning.
Moen Gafoor accumulated 5 points and a positive spread of 196 to occupy the second place while James Krakowsky sealed off the podium spots after amassing 4 points and a positive spread of 146.
Orlando Michael copped the prize for the best player outside of the top ten rankings with a performance that netted him 3 points and a positive spread of 108.
McDonald’s victims were Leon Belony (200), Grace Hercules (145), Gafoor (135), Colin Chichester (194) and Wayne Cave (198), while Gafoor took care of Maurice Munro (38), Cave (89), Chichester (34), Krakowsky (146) and Belony (26).
Krakowsky also lost to Chichester (26) but defeated Munro (123), Michael (27) and Grace Hercules (123). The winners were all presented with lucrative prizes compliments of the sponsors, H. H. Halim and Sons Generator Contracting Company.
Meanwhile, the executive of the GASP will soon commence intense works to make the school scrabble programme a reality. According to Interim President, Colin Chichester, the modalities are currently being addressed and three of the top seeds, Gafoor, Belony and McDonald have received certain mandates to see the initiative off to a smooth start.
Several other players have been identified to play active roles in the initiative and the executives are now assessing the cost and format before initiating the venture.
