The battle continued between the two top cyclists in Berbice and in the end after an intense battle for about 42 miles it was Neil Reece that came out the winner over Dwight Holder when the Flying Ace Cycle Club EZJet 50-mile road race was held on Sunday last in the Ancient County. The race pedalled off at around 09:00hrs from Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam and proceeded to No.36 village on the Corentyne before turning back to finish at the place of origin. Reece’s winning time was 2hrs 28minutes and 54 seconds with Holder one minute and 40 seconds behind.
Customer Service manager Amit Lakhan (left) presents Reece with his accolade as the rest of the participants and officials appreciate the moment.
As the cyclist pedalled off from the starting point it was clear that an intense battle was looming. Both men were weary of each other and using tactics as part of their strategy the riders set out in their quest for championship honours.
Ray Millington who was teaming up with Holder as part of their strategy went out early and left the pack. However Rohan Persaud who was in partnership with Reece decided to go after Millington and he soon caught up with him after about five miles. This forced Holder to change gear and pursue the leaders. Reece, not wanting to lose sight of his rival, soon followed a move which brought the entire peloton off their saddles and not long after the entire bunch was back together.
It was soon a two man battle as Reece and Holder decided that enough was enough and they will try to win the race by themselves as the riders went after each with the intention of outdoing the other. They soon opened a gap on the rest of the field. They continued to increase their lead on the upward journey, turning back together at the Number 36 Village halfway point.
The intensity and battle increased on the downward journey and when it looked that it would have been another tight finished Holder finally gave in with about eight miles to go in the No 19 area as Reece continue to press hard for the eventual win.
Wazim Hassnu came through to take third with veteran Syborne Fernandez claimed fourth ahead of Ray Millington fifth and Rohan Persaud sixth.
Female rider Marica Dick continued her dominance on the distaff side with an easy win with Toshawnna Doris coming in second and Deancae Welch third.
Andre Green upstaged Andrew Hicks to win in the juvenile category with the other position being occupied by Richard Alexander, Romello Crawford, Samuel Mootoo and Edmond Fratzen. Syborne Fernandez was the winner in the veteran category, while Elijah Brijader took top honours among the juniors. There was a special category for 12-14 riders with Andrew Hicks winning from Romello Crawford.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, customer Services Agent of EZJet Amit Lakhan stated that the company was happy to be part of the event. He gave his commitment to further sponsorship next year and hoped to see more riders participating next time.
Coach Randolph Roberts in his appreciation, thanked the company for coming on board to assist with the development of the youths and cycling. He is looking forward to a long and fruitful association with the company.
