– only two teams will advance
The Mackeson Smooth Moves 3-on-3 Basketball Competition intensifies in Linden tonight with Group Two rivalries at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Court that will select two more teams from the Mining Town to advance to the next round.
The Linden Zone of the competition started last Friday night with Jets and Ghetto going through to the next phase. Two more teams will advance from a group of six teams, which is being touted as ‘the group of death in Linden’,
tonight for the next round.
Tonight features Royals, Assassins, Jets # 1, Play Hard, Team Hover and another team still to be confirmed. The top two teams from this group will compete with the top two teams from the first Linden group to decide the overall top two teams out of Linden.
Friday night is set as the date when the two Linden representatives for the National Round-of-16 in the Mackeson Smooth Moves Competition will be decided. The competition has progressed to Den Amstel, and will move to Berbice and Bartica this weekend.
Competition to decide the Georgetown representatives is also ongoing with California Square in East Ruimveldt becoming the latest venue to host games last night. Georgetown hosted games at Burnham Court and Albouystown Court in four groups so far.
Mackeson Brand Manager, Jamaal Douglas told Kaieteur Sport that he is satisfied with how this first round of the tournament is going to-date. He said that based on the responses from all those various communities, the event has shown a definite growth.
“The competition is very good so far and the communities have been giving us great support in a lot of ways. I want to thank them for the support. As you know, we have been making our rounds around Guyana and things are heating up,” Douglas said yesterday.
He believes the tournament will get better with time and the competition will intensify with some of the best teams surfacing from the next round. Douglas urged basketball enthusiasts to continue to support the tournament and Ansa McAl’s effort to develop the sport.
The competition will host teams from across Guyana for the biggest purse in local basketball; an enormous $1M winner-take-all top prize is up for grabs. In addition, there is an incentive for the communities, the enhancement of their courts and prizes for patrons. (Edison Jefford)
