Plans are in the pipeline for the continued improvement of the Maternity Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to transform it into an advanced ward with more patient care and patient satisfaction.
This was disclosed by Sister June Cato, the Unit’s Supervisor, during an interview with this publication.
Sister Cato said that the first beneficial improvement in the unit was the elimination of the two persons per bed scenario, which the hospital had been experiencing for the longest while.
She stated that construction works were recently done to extend the postnatal and prenatal bed areas and six new beds were placed in the unit to make mothers more comfortable.
The Supervisor added that the unit is no longer overcrowded like before.
“After numerous complaints, the hospital moved the washroom and added six more beds.”
Cato stressed that the number in the prenatal ward has reduced significantly because patients who experience minor pains or who are not ready to give birth are not admitted like before.
“Also, when a baby is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NCU), and if the mother is in good condition and lives in Georgetown, we allow her to go home and she can come and visit the child.”
Previously, “if we delivered 20 babies, there would be 20 mothers who can go home, but they are just there and the Unit would have been overcrowded.”
Sister Cato said, being the Departmental Supervisor, she is very happy how the Maternity Ward has been developing.
She also explained that the Maternity Unit does not experience any shortage of drugs as compared to some of the other wards, including the eye clinic.
The Departmental Supervisor also boasted that the unit currently has 52 Midwives, 10 Staff Nurse-Midwives, 13 Staff Nurses, three Nursing Assistants, six Patient Care Assistants and six Ward Managers.
When asked whether the Maternity Unit has the correct amount of staff to manage the unit, she responded “we never have the correct amount, but we have enough staff to manage the unit and if we had more, then works could be easier.”
