Executive member of the Alliance for Change (AFC) Moses Nagamootoo has applauded the initiative of the just concluded NCN sponsored debates and has urged its continuance. He however opined that the “David facing Goliath” debate scenario needs rules of engagement if the programme is to be effective.
Nagamootoo suggested that should the programme resume it should entail live audiences nationwide with citizens being afforded the chance to ask the government questions.
“We would like to see a live audience, we would like the debate to be taken countrywide and let the people come forward and ask the questions,” Nagamootoo argued.
The AFC member was speaking to media operatives at the party’s weekly press briefing last Wednesday when he stressed that a level playing field is needed during the debates to earn meaningful result. Nagamootoo said that the AFC entering the debate was like “David facing Goliath” since opposing representatives are usually outnumbered, though not out-argued.
Nagamootoo argued that the debate programme lacked definition but was very useful in highlighting the unfairness of its operators.
“It shows the hand of the government, that one cannot expect equity, equality or any sense of fairness on the party’s part. The programme lacks definition, it is either a debate among equals or it is a debate that is equal in terms of participation; you can’t rig the debate and try to outnumber us. We were outnumbered but not out foxed.”
When referring to the numerous government representatives on the debate panel, Nagamootoo said they are “cornered animal”. “The government is afraid of criticism and thus walks with its guards to surround itself at any forum where the least criticism could be leveled against it.”
“This is a very frightened and timid animal, so the debate is useful to expose to the Guyanese people that you’re dealing with an Administration that is not going to open up to society for debate and discussion that will help to take us forward.”
