The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) will today and tomorrow hold a Basic Referees’ and Table Officials’ Clinic at the Mackenzie Sports Club Lounge.
The association is aiming at the start of the BOSAI Basketball club championship and an Under-15 Inter Secondary Schools basketball tournament which will be played shortly and has seen the need to increase the number of officials in the area.
The Education Department of Region 10 has approved participation by secondary schools to attend the training, which will allow both teachers and students inclusive of two private schools to become better informed about the Rules and Regulations involved in officiating the game at the competitive level.
Among the resource persons being used for the clinic, which will be held today (Saturday) from 13.00-17.00hrs (1.00pm to 5.00pm), and tomorrow (Sunday) from 14.00hrs to 19.-00hrs (2.00pm to 7.00pm), are Technical Adviser of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Mr. Abdulla Hamid, Lloyd Ross, Quincy Cummings, Carlton Gravesande, Ashton Angel (Jr.) and Joe Chapman.
The seminar will also assist those students who at the school level are preparing for the practical aspect of the CSEC Physical Education Subject, to be in a better position to execute their programmes knowing the basic rules of the game.
The association is also looking to improve its current crop of officials of the game in the town and will be looking for the seven clubs namely Kashif and Shanghai Kings, Wismar Pistons, Retrieve Raiders, Amelia’s Ward Jets, Block 22 Flames, Half Mile Bulls and Victory Valley Royals to send representatives to become aware of the most recent changes of the game after FIBA’s 2010 Official Basketball Rules.
