Earlier in the Week, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, directed the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) to convene a meeting of all relevant stakeholders to ensure that Demerara Timbers Limited (DTL) workers are treated fairly and that the operation of the company is not interrupted.
His comments came during the two-day strike by workers of Demerara Timbers Limited. Following the Minister’s directive, a meeting involving five workers representatives from Demerara Timbers Limited, Mabura; two from Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU); along with the management of DTL; the Chief Labour Officer and Guyana Forestry Commission was convened to discuss workers’ grouse and their resumption of duties.
Yesterday they met at a formal session and by the time it was over the decision was taken to halt the strike.
“We do hope that the matter would be resolved very soon but we do not tolerate the reduction of conditions. That is an obligation that the company has; it is not that they are doing the workers a favour,” said Minister Persaud.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between President of GAWU, Komal Chand, and DTL senior executives and witnessed by the Chief Labour Officer, Charles Ogle. Immediately after the signing, workers agreed to return to work.
The agreement stipulates that 24 hours electricity supply to be restored in three weeks’ time. This time is necessary to allow for the arrival/installation of some critical generator components which are being sourced overseas.
Guyana Water Incorporated is to send in a technician today to undertake a thorough assessment of the water supply (source, filtration, treatment, storage, distribution etc.) and to make recommendations for its improvement if necessary.
The technician will be accompanied by a team comprising representatives of DTL, workers, GAWU, and GFC.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Forestry Commission has been mandated to monitor the situation to verify compliance with the commitments and the resumption of DTL’s operation.
