Hundreds of persons dressed in red and black turned up at the Agricola Ball Field yesterday to bid farewell to 17-year-old Shaquille Grant who was shot during a police raid last week Tuesday.
The “red and black colours signify murder”, was the theme of a packed programme scheduled to highlight the life of the teen who was dubbed as an active and progressive youth.
In a somber atmosphere, persons lamented on the manner in which Grant was killed and called for answers into what was described as the unjust and uncalled for murder of young people.
Several persons from other communities were present to lend support to the grieving Agricola residents. Opposition members and social activists made appearances to offer condolences to the family and friends of Grant, while members of the various organizations in which Grant was involved made presentations on his behalf.
Students of the Houston Community High, where Grant once attended, recited a poem highlighting both his achievements and the wrongful death that befell him. Grant’s past teachers spoke well of the slain teen, who they said was lively and well mannered.
Members of the teen’s dance group, cricket and football clubs also spoke glowingly about Grant. They thanked him for his contributions and the liveliness they said he brought when he was around.
Grant’s mother, Shonette Abrams, fought to hold back her tears while reading a scripture pertaining to the victory of the meek. The mother dropped to her knees, screaming to emphasise the words in the scripture.
Many of Grants female relatives broke into tears and could not be contained when the song requested by his mother “if tomorrow never comes” was sung. Many screamed and threw themselves on the ground, while some hollered, “He was no criminal and they killed him. He is a child; show me the wrong he did.”
Grant’s body was later taken to the Wesleyan Church in Water Street, Agricola, where a service was held, before interment at Le Repentir Cemetery.
