Opener Sultan Ali was in fine form over the weekend guiding Rebel to consecutive victories as the Phyllis Carter Memorial twenty20 tournament continued on the Essequibo river island of Leguan.
On Sunday at Enterprise, Young Warriors made light work of Satro in the first match of the day which started at 10:00am. Satro took fist turn at the crease and were skittled out for 19 in 7.2 overs. Brian Murphy captured 3-9 for Young Warriors who responded with 20 without loss in 1.2 overs with Muneshwar Jattan scoring 12 not out.
In the second and final match of the day, Rebel easily overcame Blenhim by 9 wickets in another low scoring affair. Raymond Nandram (3-8) and Brian Roopchand (3-3) shared 6 wickets between as Blenhim could only manage 51 before they bowled out in 12.3 overs. Sultan Ali then took advantage of some wayward bowling stroking his way to an unbeaten 37 as his team reached the winning target in 3.3 overs finishing on 53-1.
Meanwhile on Saturday at the said venue, Maryville defeated Satro by 10 runs in the day’s first encounter. Satro batted first and posted a challenging 150-7 after the game was reduced to 18 overs due to rain. Aseeb Khan hit a run a ball 49 and was supported by Armand Narine 27 as Prince Anthony and Shazaad Razack picked up two wickets each.
Satro in reply fell for 140 in 17 overs. Razack returned to top score with 60, while Rodwell Austin contributed 35. Chetram Rabindra captured 3-25 and Paul Debideen 3-35 for the winners. At 2:00pm, Rebel got the better of Falcons by a 102 runs. In a match which was reduced to 18 overs, Rebels decided to bat first after winning the toss and piled up 201-9. Sultan Ali was their leading run getter with 99, while Wazir Ali scored 35. Aquasie Arthur claimed 3-28.
Falcons in response were bowled out for 99 in 16.4 overs. Rick Stephen was the only batsman that offered any resistance with 35 as Raymond Nandram bagged 3-21 and Roopchand 2-23.The competition continues on Saturday. (Zaheer Mohamed)
