The inaugural Wilbur Hope Memorial Inter Secondary School football tournament has been launched and is expected to get kicking from today, Monday 17 September, with two matches at the All Saints Scot Church ground, incidentally the venue for all of the matches.
The competition, which is being sponsored by US Army Soldier Kevin Leroy Henry a former NAMS student and New Amsterdam resident and others, will see six secondary schools in the New Amsterdam Canje area participating. The schools are Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS), Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS), Vryman’s Erven Secondary (VESS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS).
Back home on holiday Henry stated that he and Hope were good friends and since Hope’s demise he always wanted to do something in memory of his one time pal and is making full use of the opportunity now. He stated that by organizing the activity it also gives him an opportunity to give back to the community that has given him so much. He is hoping that others can come on board to make the activity a truly beneficial one for the entire community at large and the youths especially.
The late Wilbur “Hopey” Hope a former resident of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam suffered from an Acute Heart condition and died in 2001 at the young age of 33. He was an ardent sportsman who participated in numerous sporting activities including Football, both hard and softball Cricket, Athletics, Basketball, Table Tennis and Volleyball and went on to represent Guyana in Football and Athletics.
His relatives last year handed over a Pavilion which was constructed in the Tucber Park ball field in memory of his 10th death anniversary to the people of the Tucber Park Community. A father of two, Hope subsequently migrated and continued in the same vein overseas until he succumbed to his illness.
At the launching ceremony which was held at the All Saints Scots Church ground on Saturday the respective schools were introduced to the sponsor. The schools were was presented Jerseys, Trunks and two footballs each. In today’s games BHS will open up against CSS to be followed by the clash between BEI and VESS. The competition will continue tomorrow with TASS opposing NAMS. The matches will be of 60 minutes duration and the four top teams will receive trophies. Starting time is 15:30hrs.
There will also be incentives for the MVP, Best Striker, best Midfielder, best defender and best Goalkeeper.
Former nationals Adrian “Sugar Foot” Forde, Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey, Phillip “Pine” Carrington and Sherwin Forde among others are assisting with the coordination of the competition. (Samuel Whyte)
