Tenelec Inc. 1st Div. 50-over competition
Former West Indies opening batsman, Sewnarine Chattergoon, produced an outstanding performance with the bat for his club, Albion Community Centre, which provided the backbone of their victory over Bermine Memorex thus earning them a place in the final of the 2011 Tenelec Inc. first division 50 over competition in Berbice.
Home team Albion were invited to bat by Bermine Memorex which won the toss. Chattergoon opened with former Guyana Under-19 batsman Kandasammy Surujnarine who was caught and bowled by off spinner Stephen Latcha for 16.
The score was quickly 38-2 when Guyana Under-19 pacer Romario Shepherd-DeJonge had Veerapen Permaul caught for 3. Jonathan Foo joined Chattergoon but with the Bermine spinner Latcha and left arm spinner Eugene LaFleur holding tight reins the pair could only muster 42 runs in the next 14 overs before Foo finally fell to LaFleur for 20 at 80 for 3.
Chattergoon continued to prop up the innings, putting on 28 for the 4th wicket with the current West Indies A captain, Veerasammy Permaul (11) and 40 for the 5th wicket with West Indies leg spinner Devendra Bishoo (13). With Shepherd-DeJonge snapping up Andy Mohan (2) and Satesh Dwarka (0) in consecutive balls, Albion slumped to 161 for 7 in the 45th over with Chattergoon still there on 95.
He was joined by David Latchaya and the two added a valuable 36 runs during which time Chattergoon reached three figures to see Albion to 197 for 7 in their 50 overs. Chattergoon’s 121 was decorated with 6 fours and 1 six; Latchaya ended on 6 not out.
Bowling for Memorex Bermine, Shepherd-DeJonge, took 3 for 41 from 9 overs while there was one each for Latcha, Mickle and LaFleur.
When Bermine began their response, they probably fancied their chances of overhauling the total but were confronted by the off spin of former Guyana youth cricketer, Veerapen Permaul.
By the 2nd over they lost two key batsmen, Keion DeJesus and Eugene LaFleur, with just 1 run on the board.
Tregon Henry and Anthony D’Andrade repaired the damage somewhat but after they had added 47, Henry went stumped off Veerasammy Permaul for 20. D’Andrade who was going well fell short caught off Bishoo playing an injudicious shot for 31. Berbice Under-17 batsman Hakeem Hinds was outfoxed by Guyana Under-19 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie for 4 and Bermine slipped to 64 for 5.
Devon Clements was joined by Ishwar Singh and together they gave Bermine some hope with a 6th wicket partnership of 41 before Clements was caught off Motie for 26; 17 runs later, Singh was stumped off Motie for 30 at 122 for 7. Veerasammy Permaul came back to clean up the tail as Memorex Bermine fell for 142 in 46.5 overs to hand Albion a comfortable 55-run victory.
Bowling for Albion, Veerasammy Permaul took 4 for 28 from 8.5 overs, Gudakesh Motie 3 for 36 from 10 overs, Veerapen Permaul 2 for 31 from 10 overs and Devendra Bishoo 1 for 20 from 9 overs.
