People from all countries of the world, who know what is going on in Guyana, laugh at this nation. We do the stupidest things and the normal mind wants to know how human beings can be so clownish and self-destructive.
Mr. Gerry Gouveia should be on our radar screen. An employee from his company has been arrested for cocaine trafficking. One would assume that Mr. Gouveia would do the normal, sane thing and let the law take its course. Countless times, employees of companies get tangled up with the law and you don’t see the firms holding internal enquires. What is the relevance?
We must ask Mr. Gouveia if tomorrow another employee is accused of duty free scams, whether there will be a company probe. If next week, another Roraima employee is passing off donkey meat as beef, will Roraima investigate again? Well, I guess you can argue that nothing is wrong if Gerry Gouveia (I won him a bet but I am still to collect) wants to hold an internal inquiry.
But he went about it in a silly, asinine way. Why should I accept the findings of a team that Mr. Gouveia himself appointed to look into how an employee of his got involved in alleged cocaine trafficking.
The team is headed by attorney James Bond. Sound strange! Bond is an APNU parliamentarian and a lawyer without substantial experience. So Gouveia who is close to the PPP Government as I am close to my wife (married for 34 years) selected an opposition parliamentarian. One word best describes that – enigma.
Also on the committee is frequent Chronicle letter-writer and PPP supporter, Roshan Khan. If Gouveia is reading this I would like to recommend an additional member to the probe team – Kwame McCoy. I am telegraphing my thoughts to Gouveia – this column will not accept the findings of his handpicked investigators.
Before we leave the topic, I hereby recommend to James Bond, a James Bond movie – “The spy who loved me”
If you think the Gouveia inquiry smacks of asininity then what do you think of Bibi Shadick becoming head of the National Broadcasting Authority? I functioned with Ms. Shadick on the UG Council where I threw her application in the dustbin when it came before me when she applied for the post of Registrar.
UG has gone to the dogs but to have Shadick as Registrar had to be the final nail in the coffin. Shadick, who obviously was giving up her law practice when she applied for the UG position knows as much about the media and communications as I know about dancing and I know to myself I am the world’s worst dancer.
From asininity we go to masochism. This country has become the tragedy spot of the world because the violations that it accepts and is happy to live with not even the citizens of the world’s worst dictatorships would tolerate.
Dr. David Hinds who sits on the APNU Council of Leaders as an alternating WPA member has experienced a strange burglary at his home where just two laptops were removed.
The cell phones, jewelry and TV sets were not touched. Then his workplace, Arizona State University was bombarded with e-mails informing the university that he intends to assassinate the Guyanese President. APNU and the WPA are yet to inform the university that Hinds is the target of powerful politicians that is out to scandalize him.
APNU and the WPA are yet to tell the PPP Government that such nasty politics will not be accepted and if it continues there will be consequences
We just take all the mess the government throws on us. The masochism gets deeper when you think that the government has minority status. It did not win a majority at the last national election. But it functions as if it has a landslide mandate. It goes around imposing interim management committees on Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in areas where it has never won a majority of votes in regional and national elections.
So when and where will be the next manifestation of masochism? I guess it is coming soon. When a government is contemptuous of its opposition as we see with the PPP Government, no type of violation is beyond imagination. So we have Kwame McCoy on the Rights of the Child Commission; Bibi Shadick heading the Broadcasting Authority; Neil Kumar still is National Sports Director; Kellawan Lall is Ambassador to one of the world’s most important countries, Brazil; BK Tiwarie is Honorary Council to Spain. So why not make the alleged sex-talk lecturer at UG, Evan Persaud, the Vice Chancellor. Why not?
