National Scrabble Champion, Abigail McDonald, resumed her winning ways when she defied a second round loss to Leon Belony by a spread of 41 to capture the top prize when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Open Championships concluded at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas lands Sunday afternoon last.
McDonald amassed 5 points with a positive spread of 473 to relegate Belony to second place after he had scored 4 points with a positive spread of 514. Moen Gafoor closed off the podium spots with a similar amount of points as Belony but a lower positive spread of 82.
Grace Hercules distinguished herself among the lower rated players, also scoring 4 points but with a negative spread of 118. The Lindener is a persistent player and might just have clinched the third place but for losses by large spreads to McDonald (136) and Gafoor (118). She nevertheless scored convincing victories over Orlando Michael (56), Michael Benjamin (31), Maurice Munru (80) and Belony (93).
McDonald’s other 4 points were accrued after wins over Munru (70), Gafoor (118), Michael Benjamin (118) and James Krakowsky (72). Belony’s other victims were Michael (268), Krakowsky (73) and Munru (158). Gafoor scored wins over Julian Skeete (4), Wayne Cave (16), Belony (15) and Hercules (13).
The organizers will meet shortly to announce the next competition day but members of GASP are reminded that practice sessions are on Thursday at the Malteenoes Sports Club starting at 19:00hrs.
