A hire car driver from Lot 71 Gordon Street Kitty was released on $250,000 bail after he acquired over $1million under the pretense that he could aid in the reduction of Customs duty on a motor vehicle.
Rajendra Gopie, 45, pleaded not guilty to obtaining money by false pretense after he appeared before the Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday.
Police claim that between July 31 and August 3, 2012 Gopie collected $1,150,000 from Sarran Deokarran under the pretense that he was in a position to aid in lessening the customs duty for a motor vehicle passing through John Fernandes Wharf.
Gopie’s lawyer, Paul Fung-A-Fat requested minimum bail. He told the court that the accused has indicated that repayments will be made to the complainant.
Reports are that Gopie and the complainant know each other and as such the complainant was inquiring about getting a vehicle which was sent by a relative from overseas cleared through Customs at a reduced tariff when the defendant told the man that he knew someone who could get the job done for the price of $1,150,000. Gopie subsequently collected the money, but when Deokarran tried to contact him via telephone in relation to the agreement the calls went unanswered.
The matter was reported to the police and Gopie was arrested and charged.
The accused was granted six months to make the financial settlement. He will make his next court appearance today September 11.
