Several pairs enjoyed first round victories when the Trophy Stall-sponsored Doubles Championships opened on Friday, at the Pegasus Hotel Hardcourts.
Among the pairs to have registered wins were Nicholas Glasgow / Daniel Lopes, Sandeep Chand / Godfrey Lowden, Darren King /Chris Lewis, Benedict Sukra /Khalif Gobin and Irzad Zamal / Sunesh Maikoo.
Sponsor Ramesh Sunich, Proprietor of Trophy Stall, who served off the first ball to declare open the tournament in his comments reminded all that as far as he can remember, tennis was a sport played by the wealthy and that over the years he watched the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) create opportunities for everyone to learn to play the sport and ultimately change that impression.
This according to him is what prompted his further contribution to the development of the sport and hence he is pleased to see the additional Novice Doubles category.
Ramesh Seebarran thanked Sunich for being a friend of tennis throughout the years by providing trophies for tournaments, but expressed deepest gratitude for his involvement in the sport through sponsorship. He also thanked the Pegasus Hotel for once again providing access to their tennis facilities for the activities of the GLTA.
Meanwhile, matches continued over the weekend at the Pegasus and Le Resouvenir courts.
