The price of fish has risen on the Essequibo coast, Region Two, as fishermen continue to struggle with difficulties in acquiring ice.
As of Tuesday, ice has risen from $2 to $8 per pound.
Several fishermen are threatening to give up in face of the rising costs and difficulties in accessing ice.
Popular fisherman, Haresh Singh, of Hampton Court Village, Essequibo Coast, is one of them. Singh said the situation is compounded by the fact that two of the private fishing entities are currently facing mechanical problems and has not been supplying fisher folks with ice since earlier this week.
“Since Tuesday the complex at Zorg has been down and the one at Lima has not been supplying fishermen with ice for the longest while.”
The angry fisherman stressed that the only option available to them now is a facility at Charity, further down the Essequibo Coast.
Fishermen are claiming that the business at Charity has since increased the fee to $8 per pound.
Romel, another fisherman, said for years fishermen, especially in Region Two, continue to struggle to access ice. The situation is now a frightening one. He too might be forced to quit.
Several workers are being affected.
“The price for ice in Georgetown is $4-$5 and yet we are not getting ice but the price has increased.”
Narine, the largest fish vendor on the Essequibo Coast, said he too is affected by the recent increase in ice price. He usually purchases $5,000-$6,000 worth in ice to preserve his stocks daily.
Numerous meetings were held with government but nothing concrete has emerged.
Late last month, Chief Fisheries Officer, Denzel Roberts, had met with the fishermen on the ice issue.
The fishermen are desperately imploring for President Ramotar to intervene immediately.
The complex at Lima, which was intended to facilitate fisherfolk with ice, has been leased out to a businessman.
