Searchers around 13:00 hrs on Tuesday found the body of Jermaine ‘Kevin’ Anthony, 18, of 17 School Street, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
He went missing Sunday afternoon and was feared drowned after he reportedly fell out of a fishing boat near the D’ Edward sluice. The body was found at the Number Four Village foreshore.
According to information, the lad who was the sixth of seven children of his mother, Meena Kumarie, a single parent and a Rural Constable in the area. It is understood that Anthony who lived with his mother and younger brother, 12, at their D’ Edward home worked in a store in the area.
He recently left his home and was staying by his girlfriend at Rosignol.
Kaieteur News was told that he and his girlfriend’s father and another man would usually go on fishing trips. On the day in question, he was in a boat in the trench by a sluice, not far from the Berbice Bridge when he reportedly slipped and fell over. At the time, he was with his girl’s father and the other man fixing their seine.
Valiant efforts to rescue him proved futile as the sluice was open. It is believed that the current send him disappearing in the rough waters into the Berbice River.
His mother said that upon receiving news that he fell overboard, she and other relatives immediately journeyed to Rosignol where they received conflicting information about what happened. They continued the search until around midnight Sunday. The search continued Monday without any assistance from authorities.
The family received the dreaded news around 13:00 hrs on Tuesday. The woman said that she was sitting on the koker when they were told that a body was spotted on the Number Four area. Their worst fears were confirmed when it was discovered that it was indeed the body of the teen. The relatives are insisting that something is amiss. They stated that when the body was found, it was bloated and blood was oozing from the noose with an eye missing.
They now want the police to conduct further investigations into the matter.
The father of the girlfriend was initially held but has since being released. Investigations are continuing.
Anthony is the third fisherman from the Rosignol area to have disappeared from the area in just over a week.
The two other men are boat owner, Mahendra ‘Rub’ Ompertab, 29, of Lot 318 Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice and his brother-in-law, Kanhai Madramootoo, 42, of the same address.
The men who are attached to the Rosignol Fishermen Coop Society left their base in their small vessel fitted with a 40-hp engine for a journey which do not usually last more than 12 hours. They have been missing now for over 13 days.
