A 22-year-old woman who had a hole in her heart succumbed at around 08:00 hours on Friday, seven days after she underwent an abortion at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Dead is Shebeki “Tiffany” Enniss of Berbice, West Bank Berbice (WBB).
According to information, Enniss was three months pregnant but because of her “heart condition,” doctors at GPHC had advised her to abort the child.
The 22-year-old woman followed her doctor’s advice and did the abortion two Fridays ago.
According to her fiancé Neil Dick, minutes after the surgery, the doctors inserted a “coil” in her.
A “coil” is a small plastic device, not much longer than a match, which is placed inside the womb to prevent a woman from getting pregnant.
She was discharged the following day (two Saturdays ago).
However her condition worsened over the weekend and her boyfriend took her back to the hospital last Monday.
“She kept crying out for belly pain and I took her Monday and they discharged her Tuesday but she still keep crying out for pain,” the man told this publication.
He said that after Enniss continued crying out for abdominal pain, he took her to see a doctor at the Palms Geriatric Home on Brickdam, Georgetown.
“When the doctor examined her, he said that the doctors them messed up everything and he did a referral and said that she should be admitted right away. He also said that they should have waited for at least three days after the abortion before they inserted the coil,” Dick said.
The policeman said that the doctor informed him that “some infection develop inside of her” because of the coil.
“Her heart has a hole and she couldn’t bear the pain too and that is why the doctor said that they (doctors at GPHC) should have considered her condition before they inserted the coil in her,” Dick said.
A medical source from GPHC told Kaieteur News that the hospital only does an abortion when a person’s health is in jeopardy.
“Her heart had a hole, so in that case we would have done the abortion. But for someone to walk in just like that, we wouldn’t do it,” the medical practitioner said.
This newspaper was told that the hospital is aware of the woman’s death and a probe will be launched.
