Guyana had mixed results on day three of the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships being contested in T&T. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches were played Monday with defending champion Nicolette Fernandes being the only Guyanese to make it to the main draw finals.
At this stage of the event the strongest players face off against each other. Guyana was featured in 14 matches but was only able to win 6. However, this is still quite an impressive result compared to any other single country.
The match results are as follows:
MENS MAIN DRAW QUARTERFINALS
Julian Chin lost a hard fought match to 6 time Barbados National Champ Shawn Simpson 5/11, 11/6, 9/11, 6/11.
Richard Chin was upset by young Cameron Stafford of Cayman Islands who is on the pro circuit and based in Australia. Chin played very good squash but was not up to the task required as the much improved Stafford played winners and nicks (unplayable winners) from every section of the court. Chin won the first game but could not keep pace with a much younger opponent who took the following 3 games to win 9/11, 11/6, 11/9, 11/6.
MENS CLASSIC PLATE
Both Chins were then entered into the Classic plate to play off for 5-8th place. Unfortunately, they were drawn against each other and Richard Chin prevailed 13/11, 11/8, 11/8. Richard will now play T&T’s number one Josh Pinard for 5th and 6th places and Julian will play Barbados number one Gavin Cumberbatch for 7th and 8th places.
LADIES MAIN DRAW QUARTERFINALS
Guyana had a player in all four quarters. With Nicolette being the number one seed, our three remaining ladies played the numbers 2, 3 and 4 seeds and came up short.
Nicolette Fernandes beat Nadia McCarthy (Bar) 11/4, 11/0, 11/5.
Ashley Khalil lost to Barbados number two Cheri-Ann Parris (plays for Bates College in the US) 9/11,10/12, 11/7, 9/11.
Mary Fung-A-Fat played T&T number one Kerrie Sample who plays for Stanford University in the US. Fung-a-Fat, in her first senior champs played well but was outclassed by a bigger, stronger and more experienced opponent. She lost 4/11, 2/11, 4/11.
Victoria Arjoon also had the misfortune of playing one of the best players in the event- 12 time Barbados National Champ Karen Meakins and the Caribbean’s number 2 after Fernandes. Young Arjoon was outclassed 11/6, 11/4, 11/1.
LADIES MAIN DRAW SEMIFINALS
