Organizers have described the Eight Annual Berbice Exposition and Trade Fair held over the weekend at the Albion Sports Complex as a resounding success.
The event was coordinated by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC).
Speaking to the media, coordinator Tajpaul Adjodhea said that the event was one of their better ones.
The exposition was postponed from its original dates of July 20-23rd due to the inclement weather but began on Friday and ended on Monday. The official said that this year there were in excess of 100 exhibitors and booths, more than last year. It brought larger crowds also.
Adjodhea disclosed that the show was quickly outgrowing the venue and emphasized the need for a bigger and permanent exhibition site in Berbice.
The activity, he said, has become a household name in Berbice and Guyana and persons are now looking forward “to it because they know the importance and the benefits that can be derived from such an event.”
The idea of the expo is “to give producers in the Berbice region and Berbice-based businesses the opportunity to help showcase their entities. It also helps the businesses community to create links and new partners with other businesses outside of the region.”
The activity this year was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Industry.
The event was declared open on Friday by President Donald Ramotar.
Apart from the bevy of Guyanese companies that were in attendance displaying products of all sorts, there were also companies from Suriname and India. During the expo, many of the companies had giveaways and bargains. A number of new companies were also in attendance as were the usual assortments of food stalls.
Adjodhea said that the main focus this year is to raise enough funds for the chamber to complete the reconstruction of an office and a multipurpose building that could be used for training and other activities.
The chamber is also hoping to set up a permanent exhibition site in the ancient county and they will be pressing the government to help with this venture.
