As the Linden protest reaches its 27th day with some ten buildings being destroyed by fire, the Guyana Fire Service has stated that all of their efforts to respond promptly to fire calls are being thwarted by blocked roads and in some instances hostile elements.
So far the Fire Service said it has not yet been able to process the first two fires which occurred on the night of July 18th. A senior official of the Guyana Fire Service however noted that on Friday they responded to the first fire which occurred at the Linden Salvation Council Building. The official said that the fire tender only made it some 500 yards close to the burning building where it suffered a puncture as a result of debris on the road. However as the crowd started to build up the firemen were forced to retreat.
The firefighters were forced to use another fire tender. Also in one instance this publication was told that efforts were made by persons on the ground to relieve one of the ranks of the keys for the fire tender. Fortunately, the Fire Service responded a few hours later to a fire at the Wismar Bridge and they were able to extinguish that one. However, as it relates to the other fires this publication was told that it was impossible for the three fire tenders which are stationed in Linden to be dispatched.
Meanwhile in the two most recent fires at the NARI office and the One Mile Primary School, the Fire Service again was of no use as the roads in and around the Wismar area remain blocked.
