“I am concerned about their confidence,” were words Guyana’s female National Rugby Coach Shane Grant-Stuart said in an interview with Kaieteur Sport when he was questioned about the team’s preparation for the upcoming North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 2014 World Cup Qualifiers (Seven’s) in Canada from 25-26 August.
The Coach continued, “They can do so much if they build their confidence. They have the potential.”
However the team is putting in the extra work daily to reach the standard they need to be at for the Qualifier which is only 12 days away.
Grant-Stuart who stated that Barry Browne has been working on the females’ fitness, disclosed that the players are working on their skills especially ball receiving and handling, “It (balling receiving and handling) is not so bad, it is just that they need to build their confidence,” he lamented.
He added that his strategy to improve their weakness on the field will be to play a lot of practice matches which also includes games against the male national team who are also preparing for the World Cup Qualifier.
He highlighted that Alicia Fortune, a national sprinter and reigning sprint queen is one of the players with a lot of potential, but lacks the only thing that he is concerned about, ‘confidence’.
“She is more afraid of dropping the ball than catching it, so you find that she is pausing when she has to catch the ball and that gives her a slow start. She needs to stop pausing,” he said.
The athlete, who has the fastest turn-overs on the field, can be the perfect winger for a team once her flaws are corrected, “She is learning the game but she is a good runner. She can beat anybody on the outside.”
The team is expected to undergo another beep test after failing to reach the standard their Trainer/Physiotherapist Barry Browne intended.
