Central High School will not be scrapped and relocated – Chief Education Officer
Central High School will be neither scrapped nor merged with the Lodge Secondary School. This is according to Chief Education Officer, Olatto Sam, during a brief telephone interview with Kaieteur News yesterday.
The proposition for relocation came after it was realized that the building in which the high school is being housed for the past 80 years, is not in keeping with requirements.

The space between the fence and the building is narrow and there is a major lack of proper ventilation. There is no functioning Information Technology (IT) laboratory.
Kaieteur News understands that the Ministry of Education had wanted to construct a new building for the students, but because of the minimum availability of land space in the city, it was decided that the students would be accommodated in the Lodge Secondary School.
However, that was not something that was met kindly with parents and guardians. As the rumours of relocation spread, many subsequently flocked the school auditorium for a meeting with its administrators.
Many feared that the removal of the students will result in the demise of the age old legacy of Central High.
“Merging the two schools will result in Central High School being no longer what it is, and exposing their “hardworking” children to violence and indiscipline of those at Lodge Secondary is just absurd,” one parent said.
“ What goes on at Lodge is no secret. And I would rather my child stay in this same old building than get mixed up with bad company,” another parent had said.
Many had also opined that if there is indeed a need for a merger, it should be done with a school that is just as prestigious as the Central High School.
Come September, operations at the school will resume at the same location on Smyth Street, Werk-en-Rust.
