Displaying superb biceps and amazing ‘six packs’ (abdominals) among other physical attributes, Michael Dos Santos flexed his way to top honours in the heavyweight category and later returned to out-pose five other contenders including favourite, Clint Duke, to claim the Mr. Hugh Ross Classic overall title when the Hugh Ross Classic Body Building and Fitness Fair concluded at the National Cultural Centre, Saturday evening last.
A Personal Computer repairman by profession, Mr. Dos Santos won those accolades at the expense of favourite contestant, Clinton Duke who earlier had claimed the honours in the light/middleweight category.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport moments after receiving his winning prize Dos Santos said, “I think the fact that I had worked extremely hard on my definitions acted in my favour,” The young bodybuilder said he simply stuck to the basics and followed the lessons of his trainers. Reflecting on his involvement in the sport Dos Santos said that he owes it to gym manager Videsh Sookram who spotted his talent and then encouraged him to apply himself to the task. And the young man had a bit of advice for his contemporaries, “Do not be daunted by your small stature since it is hard work and perseverance, two vital variables that can be the catalyst to your advancement rather than physical attributes alone,” he advised.
The local muscleman further said that he will return to training with his focus on replicating his achievements at the seniors’ tournament slated for sometime in October.
Earlier, Dos Santos had defeated Shawn Henry of Buddies and Junior Dey of Zahir Fitness Gym to claim the honours in the heavyweight division.
Meanwhile, bantamweight, Devon Davis, won his category from Eybo Orford and Yogeshwar Nirmall in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Marlon Benette (Extreme Fitness) then out-posed Alston Lancaster (Windoro Gym) and Travis Peters (Total Fitness), in that order, to take the honours in the lightweight division.
Buddy’s Gym representative, Kerwin Clarke proved to be better than Lindy Sharp of Universal Barbell, restricting him into second place with Selwyn Grogan of Interline Gym completing the podium positions.
Bhene Taharally (Interline) triumphed over Leticia Myles (GDF), and Ashanti Fortune (Body Max) in the Ms Figure Open while Alisha Fortune posed all alone and was eventually crowned the champion in the Ms Figure Open two piece category. Interline Gym representative, Alfred Jordon, finished second to Duke in the light/middleweight category while his gym mate, Alfred Jordon closed off the podium spots. Spectators were also entertained when Sylvon Gartner took to the stage in two sessions of guest posing that left the crowd in awe. He completed his moves to tassa drumming from Prince Orlando.
Shortly after the final contestant left the stage, Hugh Ross expressed gratitude to the many corporate entities that have joined to make the occasion a success. He said that he was heartened by such support and urged his benefactors to continue with such chivalry towards the development of the sport.
Those entities that received commendations were Banks DIH Ltd, Mohamed Enterprise, Mohamed General Store, GT&T, Chase Academy, Woodpecker Sports Store, Star Party Service, International Pharmaceutical Agency, Giftland Office Max, Sanjay Variety Store, Fazia’s Collections, Terrence Clarke and Nigel’s Supermarket among others. “The organizing committee is surely grateful for such support,” exhorted Mr. Ross.
Shortly afterwards, the world renowned bodybuilder stripped off his shirt and entertained the audience for several minutes. It was indeed a fitting conclusion to an entertaining night of classical bodybuilding activities. (Reporting by Michael Benjamin and Mondale Smith)
