In an effort to enhance cardiac illness diagnosis, the LIBIN Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, collaborated with the Ministry of Health and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), to conduct an eight-week-long training program, which ended with a graduation ceremony last Thursday.
The inaugural graduates were Dr. Alexander Harvey, Dr. Kishore Ramdass and Dr. Ramsackal. Dr. Ramsackal was also named the best “student”.
These doctors successfully completed the “Competence in Cardiac Ultrasound Performance and Interpretation” course for which they were presented with certificates and tokens.
Dr. Ramsackal was also provided with portable echocardiography equipment which will enable him to provide these services in the Berbice area.
The other two graduates who are also physicians at the GPHC, are expected to make good use of the recently set up echocardiography lab, to provide the public health system access to vital cardiac diagnostic test.
In addition, Ms. Abiola Nelson, Radiology Manager and X-Ray Technician at GPHC, was awarded a special certificate in Basic Ultrasound Principles and Equipment management.
The presentations were made during a simple ceremony held at the Herdmanston Lodge.
The small gathering included the Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. David Devine; Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran; Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud; Chief Executive Officer of GPHC, Michael Khan, and the facilitators of the program which deals with the identification of cardiac abnormalities.
The actual training was done at GPHC and the Project Dawn Centre in Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown by Cardiology Specialists and Technologist Educators from Canada.
The trainers were headed by Professor Debra Isaac of the University of Calgary.
Some of the educators were, Denise Martin; Kari Lamb; Linden Santos, Peter Leaman, Michelle Ball, Michelle Robertson, Mila Potter and Henryka Stachyra.
