America Federation of Netball Associations Tournament
Guyana national Netball team got off to a terrible start at the America Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) Tournament which opened on Saturday, at the Jean Pierre Complex in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T).
The Guyanese who are among the nine teams participating in the tournament were soundly thrashed by the Trinidadians (Calypso Girls) 105-10 and were scheduled to play against St. Lucia yesterday.
In front of a sold out crowd, the Guyanese girls tried its best, but that was just not enough to get past the Trinidadians who were much bigger than most of the players on the visiting team.
The Guyanese attempted overhead passes, but saw the balls intercepted by the Trinidadians in mid-air and scored almost every time they got the ball to their Goal-shoot.
While Guyana possesses a few players who’ve played at the regional level before, the majority of the players are young when compared to the host.
This is the first time that Guyana is participating in the tournament since attaining membership to AFNA earlier this year. Grenada is the other country that is making its debut in the competition.
Meanwhile, President of the AFNA/IFNA (International Federation of Netball Associations) Molly Rhone in her presentation said that hosting such tournaments is no easy task, but was happy that T&T took up the challenge.
“Teams have travelled as far as Canada and Grenada to play in this championship, I congratulate them all and they will captivate with their skill, agility and knowledge of the game as they compete against each other in friendly rivalry”.
Apart from host Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and Guyana other countries competing in the tournament are: United States of America, St. Lucia, Jamaica, Canada, Bermuda and Barbados.
The competition, which started on Saturday, ends on Saturday, July 21st.
