Ballot Box Martyrs 55-Mile – Berbice
Alonzo Greave returned to form yesterday in the Ancient County of Berbice when he stormed to victory in the Ballot Box Martyr’s 55-Mile Road Race ahead of Robin Persaud.
While all the attention was on Greaves in the senior category, junior sensation 16-year-oold Raul Leal continues to blaze the trail as he turned in another encouraging performance.
Leal not only emerged as the top junior rider but also placed 5th overall something he has been consistent at during this season of cycling.
Greaves’ winning time was Two Hours 12 Minutes 59 Seconds; Jude Bentley continued his re-emergence as a potent competitor by placing 3rd overall, Warren Mc Kay copped the 4th place with Kester Croal closing out the top six positions in the race that commenced at Freedom House, New Amsterdam proceeded to the Corriverton Police Station before returning to No. 63 Village for the finish. Veterans, upright and female competitors completed their course on the upward journey at No. 63 Village.
Bentley’s performance was solid as he won 6 of the 8 Prime Prizes with one each to Greaves and Leal.
Following Leal to the line in the junior category was Akeem Arthur and Michael Anthony in that order.
Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton won the Veteran category ahead of Shameer Baksh and Kennard Lovell in that order.
Walter Isaacs emerged as the best in the Over-60 category while in the female / under-14 race combined J. Heywood took the top spot ahead of Marica Dick.
Two special prizes were awarded to 13-year-old competitors Alfie Sonoram and Andrew Hicks.
Forty riders faced starter’s orders.
