Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition…Annandale beat President’s College to advance

Annandale Secondary inflicted a crushing 7-1 triumph over President’s College on Friday as play in this year’s Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition continued at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground.
On target for the winners was Chavez Glasgow, who netted a treble in the 27th, 48th and 52nd minutes, while Keon Kyte, also netted a hat-trick in the 62nd, 80th and 83rd minutes and Stedmon Martin’s 45th minute strike completed their tally.
President’s College responses came from Darell Mingo (84th) and Joel Thom (87th).
Meanwhile, Teacher in charge of President’s College Sports Faculty Cecil Chin commenting on the importance of the tournament said Digicel has done a splendid job in organising and sponsoring the event, adding that because he believes that sports and an athlete’s career must start in the school, the Company through its goodwill has given a lot of potency and importance to the sport.
He said, in his opinion, however, there should be two categories, one at the Under-16 level and the other at U-18 and according to him this is because in many cases the size advantage is palpably evident.
He cited as an example, his school’s engagement against Annandale Secondary where quite a number of their players were small statured in comparison with their more taller and stronger built opponents and those two distinct physical disparities while not the only cause for their defeat was an advantage.
“If you have a U-16 category it would give the small statured players something to look forward to and not have to deal with the bigger sized players,” Chin felt.
He pointed out that hiccups are always there and you must learn from them.  Chin was high in praise of the officiating where he referred to as generally good and a development that he was satisfied with.
He, however, was adamant that the Organisers seek to have two categories that could make the tournament more competitive going forward.

Carmel Sec defeated Lodge Sec 2-1.
Uitvlugt hammered Zeeburg 6-2.
St John’s and Leonora drew 2-2 in regulation time, before the latter won 4-3 on penalty kicks.
Friendship crushed Soesdyke 10-2.
Vryman’s Erven and Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) drew2-2 , before BEI prevailed 3-2 on penalty kicks.
Houston lost to St George’s 2-5.
Ash Education edged Bush Lot 4-3 and Tagore beat GuySuCo 2-0.
