New Amsterdam Secondary School cricket Team currently preparing for the Sir Garfield Sobers School’s tournament in Barbados received a boost on Wednesday last when the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) contributed $20,000 towards their expenses.
Last year the team appeared at the international tournament for the first time and did fairly well against more seasoned opponents.
BCB Treasurer Anil Beharry said the entity was pleased that a team from the Ancient County would be playing in a tournament bearing the name of the greatest all-rounder to have played the game of cricket.
With the level of the game being very high in Berbice, Beharry expressed confidence that the New Amsterdam Secondary would make the County proud.
He urged members of the team to be proper ambassadors for Berbice and Guyana while in Barbados and to promote Guyana’s youths as disciplined and committed individuals.
Beharry committed the Board towards assisting the team on future tours while a special incentive will be coming from the Board if the school wins the tournament.
Coach of the team Julian Moore in accepting the donation expressed gratitude to the Board stating that the team was determined to make all their supporters proud by at least reaching the semifinals and then to go and become the first Guyana school to win the tournament.
The team which consists of several Berbice and Guyana junior players has been training on a daily basis for the last month and is in top shape both mentally and physically.
