Banks DIH, Republic Bank through to quarterfinals
By Sean Devers
In sunny conditions at the Banks DIH Ground, Thirst Park, a good-sized crowd watched as action in the Inter-Ministry/Corporation seven-a side Football competition continued with keen first round rivalry last Saturday.
While host, Banks DIH and Republic Bank have already filled the two quarter-final spots from Group ‘A’, places are still up for grabs in the other three Groups with three teams (C&S Electrical, Ministry of Public Works & GNSC) finishing deadlocked on 12 points from their full quota of five matches.
The three teams will now be involved in a play-off with GNSC and G&S Electrical going head-to-head in the first play-off game in one of four matches set for today under lights.
The first match last Saturday between GNIC and Republic Bank was a pulsating affair in the mid-day sun and ended in a 2-2 score-line at the completion of regulation time, resulting in the contest being decided on a ‘sudden death penalty kick-out’ with the Bankers depositing the winning goal off the boot of Leyland Monic after GNIC missed their penalty.
Travis Griffith and Linden Tickett scored for GNIC while Monic and Floyd Manifold found the back of the nets for Republic Bank during regulation time, before Monic scored again from the penalty spot to put his team into the super-eight stage of the competition.
In the other games played last Saturday, G&S Electrical hammered the Ministry of Public Works 5-1 with Jamal McRay scoring the consolation goal for the losers in the 50th minute.
Deon Alfred had a wonderful day at the office with a helmet-trick and got support from Nigel Denny who fired in the other goal.
And goals from Andrew Marcus (2nd minute), Simon Methland (12th) and Tyson Mc Naughton (25th) spurred the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to a 3-1 victory over MACORP. Aluavez Rodrigues scored in the 7th minute for Macorp before Denvon Benjamin beat the Ministry’s Custodian from the penalty spot in the 29th minute.
Ravi Chand netted twice for the Bank of Guyana in the second half against the Media United after the Newsmen were leading 1-nil at the half-time due to a goal from Capitol News’ Esaun Griffith in a 2-1 win.
In the lone game played under lights, John Fernandes got past GRA 2-0 thanks to goals from Sherwin Jacobs in the 7th minute and Alden Lawrence in the 22nd minute.
There were communication problems in the day’s final scheduled game with GT&T failing to show up and in the process handing the Ministry of Education a walk-over.
The tournament continues today with the Ministry of Education battling the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 6pm. GRA then take on GPC, GNSC contest the play-off match against G&S Electrical and the Media United face the Sports Ministry.
The organisers praised the support of their sponsors, Banks DIH (under the Poweraid brand), Ministry of Education, Talk is Cheap Internet Café, Money Gram in the Quality building at the Berbice Car Park, Andre Howard Construction, Dynamics Security Service, Delmar Shipping, Hot & Spicy Food, Sports Plus Sports Store and the Ministry of Agriculture.
While Group ‘A’ and Group ‘D’ are all but decided Bank of Guyana (9 points), the Sports Ministry (6 points), Ministry of Tourism (4 points) and Media United (3 points) can all still make it into the quarter-finals from Group ‘B’ while John Fernandes (10 points) GPC ( 4), GRA (4) and Ministry of Education (3) still have hopes of advancing from Group ‘C’.
