In an effort to build a brighter future for youths with disabilities, the Guyana Community-Based Rehabilitation Programme (GCBRP) has opted to refurbish its location at President’s College Road at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara.
The project is being funded by the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Programme.
The aim of the project is to foster community development by providing children and young people, regardless of physical and mental ability, a safe place to play and interact, transforming the centre from a space specifically for persons with disabilities, into a community gathering location.
Nonetheless, the objective is to give enhanced support to parents facing unique challenges in raising children with disabilities.
The centre from its inception, has been offering therapy, and conducting different kinds of activities with children with disabilities.
“It will have a direct impact on a very disadvantaged and marginalized group of people – Guyanese children and adults with disabilities – by providing new facilities and equipment which will enable them to develop their skills (motor, social and independent living) and enhance their physical and mental health. The project will also benefit their careers and wider family members,” a statement from the centre read.
The venture is also intended to be a demonstration project for the region and Guyana as a whole, showing what can be made available for persons with disabilities.
“GCBRP registered as a Friendly Society (Republic of Guyana) in 1995, and is managed by a National Committee whose members are elected by Regional GCBRP groups. GCBRP has successfully managed a number of international funds, and delivered significant programmes of services and activities in Guyana,” the statement concluded.
