A spanking-new shopping mall was commissioned and declared open on the Central Corentyne area on Wednesday. Additionally, two new stores officially opened their doors. One of them has returned to the Ancient County after being closed eight years ago as a result of a mega fire in the Pitt Street, New Amsterdam area.
King’s Jewellery World is back in Berbice and Homeline Furnishings Furniture and Appliance store both opened their doors to the Berbice community during a cocktail reception attended by several business persons and government officials.
Chief Executive Officer of King’s Jewellery World, Mr. Loknauth Persaud, said that the new store is of the same “standards and quality as the one that was located at Pitt Street.
“We made several attempts– we went as far as to build a new plan to restart the Pitt Street store, but we didn’t have the feelings that it was the right place, so this venue was recommended by a friend”.
The store is now located at Lot 67 Public Road, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.
The building that the store is in houses 28 other businesses, including Church’s Chicken and Mario’s Pizza. “We should have been here before Valentine’s…before Mother’s Day…and we would continue to serve you with pride and continue to bring you standards that can never be surpassed and whatever you purchase from us will last a lifetime and your children and generations will still cherish whatever you get from us”.
He added that if people look around in the store’s dazzling and well- stocked show cases, “you will see many new pieces of when we left the last time and if you were to look at the top of the building, you will see certificates”.
The certificates belong to the various gemologists employed by the company “and we don’t only take pride in producing jewellery– we back them with confidence and we have the knowledge– you can close you eyes and accept that as ‘Gospel’ because that is what we stand for, quality”.
He thanked his co- business partner, Mr. Ayube Hamid, who also opened the doors to his new business, Homeline Furnishings in the same mall. Hamid has a showroom location at Canje but this new store is more spacious and has more appliances on sale as well as locally- made furniture.
Region 6 Chairman, Mr. David Armogan, praised the two businessmen for venturing once more in Berbice. “Today, I am happy that Mr. Persaud has come back to Berbice and positioning himself in the centrally so that he can attract customers from both ends of Berbice”. Armogan said that his region is seeing quite a number of businesses springing up all over the place, “and we have seen the expansion of existing businesses and this tells us that people are having very great confidence in our economy and it augurs very well for the development of our region”.
Quite a number of “exciting prospects” are emerging across Berbice today, he stated, “for employment and for growth and the fact that this new building is housing 28 businesses, will not only create employment for Berbice but will also send a message of confidence to all potential investors who are interested in coming to our region to do business”.
The regional administration, he said, has been recently flooded with requests and applications from overseas Guyanese “who are interested in coming back to their homeland to do business, so we have been having great competition”.
“This will bring a better quality of goods and services available to our people in Berbice and as our economy continues to grow…people will naturally demand more goods and services and our business communities will have to create new and innovative ways to reach those demands”.
He credited the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) its dynamic leadership under Professor Daizal R. Samad for playing a sterling and important role in the business initiatives “and ensuring you develop people with the relevant skills and knowledge necessary to ensure you have good management at all these businesses…..so in the medium and long term, the prospects for commerce and industry looks very good in our region”.
He noted persons in Berbice are also doing business in agriculture, tourism and housing.
President of the Central Corentyne Chambers of Commerce, Lakram Rambrich was happy that the new shopping building has been opened and for the return of King’s to the area. The two new businesses, he said, will “brighten the image of Rose Hall like it was in the early 80’s and early 90’s”.
“Both of these businesses will do well because they are centrally located in Rose Hall Town and from our chamber’s point of view, they are welcomed…from the residents out there and they will be well supported”.
Other speakers at the cocktail launch included UGBC Director, Prof Daizal Samad; Veteran cricketer, Clive Lloyd; among others.
