Quick response by concerned neighbours in the vicinity of at lot 167 Waterloo Street, Georgetown contained a fire that started in a yard that contains nine houses. They spotted the blaze around 17:00 hours yesterday.
According to eyewitnesses, a 14-year-old boy was the first to respond to the fire after noticing smoke emanating from the bottom flat of the two-storey building. The child told Kaieteur News that he quickly went to the house after noticing the smoke.
The teen said that the house was not accessible because the gate was locked so he decided to jump over the fence that separates the yard from the Swansea building next door.
The boy said that when he arrived, he noticed that no one was at home and he could not access the house. By that time, the child said others had come to his assistance and persons broke the glass of the well grilled window. Through the small space, he recalled, with buckets and other utensils and the little water they had, they quickly contained the fire.
He said persons from the nearby Republic Bank also responded with fire extinguishers.
Kaieteur News understands that the rented house is the property of Attorney at
Law Sandal Kissoon. He told Kaieteur News that he is grateful for the public response. The lawyer said that the police and the fire service are investigating the matter. It is suspected that the fire source was an electrical blaze.
Kissoon said that his tenant lost most of her belongings.
Neighbours in the yard also expressed relief that the fire was contained. “Is nine houses in the yard and who knows what could have happened if no one had noticed.”
