Little Rascals rampage The Abusement Park
Led by national Under-19 champion Jason Ray Khalil, the Little Rascals stormed through The Abusement Park to claim their second straight win of the Farfan and Mendes Junior Team Squash Tournament on Thursday evening at the Georgetown Club’s squash facility.
Khalil, who captured his first Caribbean Junior title last year, helped spur a dominant 4-1 victory against The Abusement Park. Khalil took out The Abusement Park’s Captain Mary Fung-A-Fat in straight games 11-6, 11-7, 11-7, but not before giving her a full tour of all the cracks and corners of the court.
Khalil’s superb shot selection was too much for Fung-A-Fat who resorted to going all out for winners but ended up hitting the tin more often than not.
Daniel Islam battled back after barely losing the first game to Zachary Persaud, to steal the next three games 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 with authority and chalk up another win for the Little Rascals. In the third string match up, Alec Melville made like work of rookie player Mahendra Khusial 11-7, 11-4, 11-7. Patrick Fraser proved to be the exception for The Abusement Park and defeated Larissa Wiltshire in straight games 12-10, 11-1, 11-9. Gianni Carpenter benefited from a walkover victory conceded by Sarah Lewis in the third string match-up to give the Little Rascals their fourth win.
X-Men also managed to remain unbeaten after clinching win number two against Danza Kuduro 3-1 with one match still to be played. Steven Xavier dispatched Danza Kuduro’s captain Ashley deGroot 11-6, 11-9, 11-9, while third string Shomari Wiltshire took apart Justin Gomes 11-3, 11-0, 11-1. Makeda Harding was responsible for her team’s other win in this encounter after she disposed of Liam Carpenter 11-3, 11-3 and 11-1.
The clash between Danza Kuduro’s Under-15 sensation Benjamin Mekdeci and Pablio Mundini did not take place on Thursday evening. Lydia Alphonso secured the lone win for Danza Kuduro, with a 3-0 victory against Maya Collins.
With its full complement of players on Thursday night Black Panthers were able to pull off a stunning victory against Victorious Secrets. National Under-17 champion Nyron Joseph recovered from his shocking 3-0 defeat to Xavier on Wednesday night and comfortably overcame Victoria Arjoon 3-0. Black Panthers’ third string Andrew Peroune overpowered Travis Whitehead 3-0, while Lucas Jonas also defeated Dominic Collins in straight games in the fifth string battle.
Rebecca Low outdid Anthony Islam in the fourth string matchup to give Victorious Secrets its first match win of the night. Black Panthers’ second string Taylor Fernandes was also humbled by Caribbean Under-15 champion Akeila Wiltshire in the final match between the two teams, but Joseph, Peroune and Jonas had already clinched the win for the Black Panthers.
The tournament was organized by the Guyana Squash Association and will conclude this evening. Additionally, there will also be a morning session today from 10:00hrs while the final session will serve off at 18:00hrs before the tournament’s closing ceremony.
