A number of Guyana’s junior athletes who are members of the Enmore Athletic Club (EAC) will be on
show today in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago competing at the Morvant Jets and Mustangs Games starting from 09:00hrs at the Hasley Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.
Representing the Club which is coached by John Martin are World Athletics Day championship 150m winner Joshua Rawlins; Junior national youth and senior championship 200m gold medalist Elton Bollers; Inter Guiana Games (IGG) bronze medalist Ornesto Thomas and National Schools Track and Field championship athlete, Kadeem Peters.
Caribbean Chemicals has been gracious to undertake the expenses for the contingent’s airfares and the Club has expressed its profound gratitude to them as well as Fitness Express and Woodpecker Products.
Bollers (U20) who earlier this year competed at the Barbados Relay Fair held in February will be participating in the 200m and 400m; Rawlins the only Under-15 athlete on the team will compete in the boys 100m, 200m and 400m while Peters (U20) will aim to beat his opponents in the 200m and 400m and Thomas (U-17) 800m and 1500m.
This is the second year for the club’s participation at the annual Games and Team Captain Ornesto Thomas during an interview stated that team is expected to perform fairly since the athletes are in good shape for the competition: “I expect the team to do fairly well since they are in good shape.”
Thomas added that the athletes had problems acclimatizing with the new environment especially during the training sessions but they are adapting gradually.
It was also pointed out that the athletes were encountering some challenges in getting familiar with the rubberized track, especially their techniques.
Despite the challenges, the athletes have indicated that they will be looking to improve their personal best times in their respective events at the Games. It was reported that the EAC will be merging with T&T team Mugstangs to compete in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Following are the athletes’ personal best times:
Kadeem Peters: 200m – 22.40 seconds (recorded at National Youth, Junior and Senior Championship, Police Sports Club ground), 400m – 50.93 seconds (recorded at last year’s Morvant Jet and Mustangs Games).
Elton Bollers: 200m – 21 seconds (recorded at National Youth, Junior and Senior Championship, Police Sports Club ground), 400m – 51.20 (President/Jefford Classic III, McKenzie Sports Club Ground). Joshua Rawlins: 100m – 11.5 seconds, 200m – 23 seconds.
