The crème de la crème of Guyana’s distance athletes including United States of America-based
Euleen Josiah-Tanner, Trinidad and Tobago-based Kelvin Johnson and Cleveland Forde are all expected to light up the streets today in the Independence Half Marathon.
The race returns after a hiatus of 16 years, compliments of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Athletics Association of Guyana. Two of the senior athletes in the race have said that they hope to do well in the event.
“This is going to be good for my endurance. I am not looking at running fast times in the half marathon, I just want to win. I know that this is going to be good. I have the Granny Lucas 15km race in Trinidad next week so this will be a good test,” Forde indicated.
The most successful South American 10km runner in the history of the race said that he will not reveal his strategy in the grueling distance because he does not want the opposition to have any plans to defeat him heading into the race.
Meanwhile, Josiah-Tanner revealed that she is going to do what she always does, which is to go out and do her best and hope for the best result. “I am looking to do what I always have done in races like these; I am hoping to go out there and win,” she said.
Today’s race follows closely on the heels of the just-concluded President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic III, which was another premier athletics event held in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
The Independence Half Marathon will start at 5:30am at Paradise on the East Coast of Demerara with participants competing in the Open (Men and Women aged 18 & over); Masters (Men [40+] and Women [35+]) categories.
Josiah-Tanner, a mother of two has been producing superb performances this season but will find stiff opposition from the locally-based middle distance queen, Alika Morgan. Others that do well over the longer distance include GDF’s Ashanti Scott who will compete today.
The men’s open category will also be one of interest with the likes of Forde, Cleveland Thomas, who has been giving Forde a run for his money recently, Kevin Bayley and Nathaniel ‘Brother’ Biddings battling for the cash prizes and trophies up for grabs.
The event is slated to end outside the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Headquarters, Main and Quamina Streets, Georgetown.
