One of the most successful Inter-Ward Basketball teams, Wortmanville/Werk-En-Rust launched its
title campaign in the National Community Basketball League (NCBL) with a hard fought win against BV/Melanie when the competition continued Wednesday night.
The Universal Group of Companies-sponsored Wortmanville/Werk-En-Rust defeated Sculpture Craft-sponsored BV/Melanie 29-21 in a shortened version of the game owed to a late start when the nation-wide competition continued on Burnham Basketball Court.
Wortmanville, which boast some of the most seasoned players in the country in Royston Siland, Naylon Loncke and Clement Brusche among others, were forced to dig deep against BV/Melanie in their first game of the tournament that has reached national proportions.
In the end, experienced prevailed at the undocumented Mecca of ‘street ball’. The quality of the Wortmanville/Werk-En-Rust team rubbed shoulders with the many interesting new facets of the NCBL to create a fusion of competitive basketball and entertainment.
The initial game set the right atmosphere for the Mc Doom/Diamond versus the Tucville/Guyhoc encounter, which the former prevailed 49-40 in yet another close battle. In the four groups across Guyana, only two teams will advance to the knockout round.
McDoom/Diamond’s Jermaine Slater had 10 points while Tucville/Guyhoc guard, Ryan Melville had14 points in that game. The NCBL is a mechanism that is aimed at recapturing public interest and proliferating basketball in Guyana.
The tournament continues tonight at the same venue with West Side, the team that replaced Kitty that failed in their efforts to present a team, vs. Gizmos & Gadgets East/West Ruimveldt in game one at 6pm and Western Union Plaisance/Vryheids-Lust vs. Lodge/Medowbrook in game two at 8pm. All games are expected to start on time.
