Concerned neighbours in Perai Square, East La Penitence, rescued a 10-year-old boy Tuesday after he received a sound thrashing from his stepfather for eating the last piece of stew fish.
The 10-year-old boy and his eight-year-old sister were being kept at a neighbour’s house until the mother came home. Residents said that the child ran from his home screaming and begging for assistance when the blows from the cable became too much for him.
The child said that his stepfather would usually beat him in such a manner causing him to sustain injuries. He also said that at times his step dad would beat him and his siblings in front of their mother but she would save them.
The 10-year-old told this publication that his mother had prepared stew fish and rice for the household before going to work. He said he became hungry and ate a piece of the stew fish. When his stepfather saw that the food was eaten he became enraged and turned to the cable wire to discipline the child.
The neighbours told Kaieteur News that the mother works at the Stabroek Market where she owns a stall and would not always be around. It is also understood that the stepfather does not live with the mother and her children.
It was further alleged that the stepfather promised to kill the children.
Neighbours were very angry over the incident and were requesting the intervention of the authorities.
One woman said, “He lucky I am a child of God, or I would go to him myself and squeeze the life out of him. No one should treat a child like this, no matter what they do,” the neighbour opined.
The residents were also upset that almost half an hour after calling the police, no one had showed up, not even ranks from the East La Penitence Police Station which is located a few corners away.
The residents are calling on authorities from the Child Protection Agency (CPA) and other relevant organisations to look into the matter.
