… family not allowed to witness PM
The family of Chitrawattie Ramjiwan, called “Nadira”, the woman who died in childbirth last Friday on her way to the New Amsterdam hospital, is devastated, heartbroken and peeved, even more so since the baby has also succumbed.
The baby died on Monday at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The family wants answers and justice and feels that they are not getting any.
The 20-year-old woman of Lot 53 Cotton Tree village, West Coast Berbice, and formerly of Black Bush Corentyne, Berbice died on Friday after she gave birth to her second child.
She was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam hospital after she was transferred there from the Fort Wellington Hospital after she encountered difficulties during delivery while giving birth to the child who has since died.
A post mortem performed on the body on Wednesday at the New Amsterdam hospital gave the cause of death as shock and hemorrhage.
However relatives stated that they are not pleased, since they were not allowed to witness the post mortem. They stated that they found that strange. They said that they were just told that she died from shock and hemorrhage, but don’t know shock and hemorrhage from what.
They are sensing a cover up and believe something is not right. They are calling on the relevant authorities, including the Minister of Health, the Prime Minister and President to assist them in getting justice in the matter.
According to the woman’s husband, Lall Ramjiwan, 28, a factory worker at the Blairmont Estate, he is devastated, heartbroken and distressed and sad to lose his healthy wife and baby in one blow.
He had told Kaieteur News that his wife took in with labour pains and was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where she went into labour. He had stated that his wife encountered a lot of difficulties in delivering the baby.
“Despite her efforts the baby was not coming out. She actually gave up, until the baby finally born.” He stated that he was present and was told by the medical staff that the baby had a 50/ 50 chance of surviving. He had said that his wife was bleeding and after a while he was told that his wife and child will have to be transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital for further medical attention.
The man, whose other child, Amrita is one year old, further said that he was told that his wife was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam hospital.
The family and a few organisations are calling on the authorities for a full investigation into the woman’s death.
