All Saints Primary school played unbeaten to emerge champions when the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club held their twentieth anniversary Inter Primary school football tournament for schools in New Amsterdam.
The one day tournament which was played recently at the All Saints Scott Church ground was played on a round robin basis and saw the teams engaging each other using the small goal version, which saw five teams participating.
The schools that took part were All Saints Primary, St. Therese Primary, Overwinning Primary, St Aloysius Primary and New Amsterdam Primary.
At the end of the competition both All Saints and St Therese were deadlock on six points each. However All saints were declared winner by virtue of scoring more goals than their opponent in the competition.
Overwinning Primary and St Aloysius Primary were also deadlock on four points in the fight for third place. It took 10 penalty kicks to decide the third place finisher.
At the end of the competition Lenard Reid of All Saints Primary was named the most valuable player. The most goals in the competition were scored by Jamal McCalmont of All Saints, while his teammate Trivet Edwards took home the best goalkeeper prize. The most promising player on show was Deon Swami of Overwinning Primary.
In brief remarks at the presentation ceremony, officer in charge of the New Amsterdam Prisons Assistant Superintendent Carl Graham congratulated the teams for putting on a good show. He had special commendation for the winners All Saints Primary and the individual prize winners. He also told the youngsters to continue training, take in their education and have good discipline and they will definitely go a far way.
He told them that, “It is not only about winning, what is also important is how you play the game.” He challenged them to start thinking about playing for Guyana as they are many opportunities available.
