As Guyanese prepare to mark another milestone in Guyana’s history when this nation celebrates its 46th year as an independent nation, the executive of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) will commemorate the day with the GASP Independence Open championships at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Saturday May 26 next.
In last year’s tournament, Moen Gafoor turned in a sterling performance to register 4 games and a positive spread of 361 to take top honours, while Colin Chichester finished in second place with 4 games and a positive spread of 257.
Orlando Michael had occupied the final podium spot, also with four games but a lesser positive spread of 198 while Nicholas Grant and Grace Hercules had also won four games apiece but Grant had eventually clinched the fourth place spot by dint of a higher positive spread of 127 as against Hercules’ negative spread of 67.
Since then, there have been numerous competitions and the lower seeds have improved tremendously. Therefore, the top seeds will be required to dig deep to overcome the challenges of Maurice Munroe and Delon Moffat, arguably the most improved junior players.
Even then, one will have to be wary of the old master, Ulric Harris, not to mention the likes of national champion, Abigail McDonald and her predecessor, Fred Collins, whose recent return to competition has reinstated the competitive edge.
The players would be competing for lucrative prizes while a special prize will be given to the best player outside the top ten rating. To date, three players, Moffat, Hercules and Munroe have won that prize and the other lowly rated players would also want to grab the honours.
The registration period gets underway at 09:30hrs and the first tile would be moved half an hour later. Players are reminded that late comers would have their clocks activated in their absence. A fee of $500 would be collected at the time of registration.
