Police have detained a prominent Lethem businessman after a 17-year old girl alleged that he forced her into sex against her will.
The businessman who was once a senior member of the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce and Industry was arrested yesterday and according to reports, is being brought to the city where he will be further questioned.
The alleged incident which was denied by the businessman occurred last Thursday but was only reported to the police two days ago.
According to reports, the girl was on her way to school when the businessman offered her a ride in his vehicle. She was taken to an undisclosed location where she and the businessman engaged in the sexual act.
The girl’s father who reportedly saw when she was picked up by the businessman went to her school to see if she was taken there and was surprised when he found out that she was not.
He waited and eventually saw when the businessman brought the teenager to school.
When the father questioned her, the teenager was reluctant to speak about what happened. However she later confided in some concerned adults and this led to the police being brought into the matter.
The businessman was arrested and despite his denial, he was placed into custody pending charges.
