A 31-year-old mother of two lost her life when the car in which she was learning to drive plunged
into a canal on the Hope Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), at around 15:00hrs yesterday.
Dead is Shaunette Williams of 1 Ann’s Grove, ECD.
Her reputed husband, Shevon Andrews, who was acting as her driving instructor at the time, managed to free himself and make it to safety.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Williams, a hairdresser by profession, lost control of the car and before her instructor could react to right the vehicle, it plunged into the canal that runs alongside the roadway.
The car eventually turned over, placing Williams who had her seat belt on, in a precarious position.
According to relatives, Andrews, after being able to free himself from the passenger seat of the toppled car, tried feverishly to pull out the mother of his children. By the time he managed to do so, she was not breathing.
The woman appeared to have already died. This was subsequently confirmed by hospital officials after she was pronounced dead on arrival.
A number of relatives converged outside the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit and their screams and cries filled the environs of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) compound.
Speaking with this newspaper, Hazel Hanover, who identified herself as a
relative of the dead woman’s reputed husband said, “I get de call from home saying my relative and his child mother was in a car and they reach up in a accident. When I go, I see the car in the water in a trench, and I rush down to Georgetown Hospital just to see if I could see him, but then I was made to understand that de girl, she died.”
Meanwhile, the hairdresser’s reputed husband is assisting the police in their investigations.
