Japanese nurse educator to boost GPHC’s Paediatric services

Paediatric care is expected to be boosted at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with the arrival of a Japanese volunteer nurse who is an experienced Paediatric Nurse Educator, and brings to Guyana over 30 years of experience in the medical field.

Sumiko Yoshida, a retired staff nurse and Administrator, is the second Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) nurse to come to the country and work with the GPHC with the sole aim of improving paediatric nursing.
As part of JICA’s volunteer efforts, the organisation also donated several items to the GPHC Paediatric Ward yesterday morning, where Yoshida was present.
This is the second month she has been functioning at the GPHC and is scheduled to be here for two more months.
Kaieteur News understands that there is a planned nursing education exercise which will be facilitated by Yoshida at the GPHC. It is slated for June 5 to July 27, 2012 and based on the “Introduction to Paediatric Nursing”.
The selected nurses will benefit from 32 hours of lecture sessions and demonstrations.
Guyana formally established diplomatic relations with Japan in 1967 and these relations have been built essentially around economic cooperation projects.
This country has been one of the main recipients of Japanese assistance in the English-speaking Caribbean, through programmes such as general grant aid, small scale grant aid, as well as training programmes under JICA etc.
