With a record of 3,145 deliveries, among them 15 twins, over a 42-year span, Beatrice Norton, deserved to be recognised for her outstanding contribution to the health sector.
A simple ceremony was conducted by the Region Two Administration. Beatrice Norton, a/k Auntie Minnie, of Hackney Canal, received a token of appreciation from senior executives of the Region’s Administration.
Nurse Norton, as she is familiarly referred to in Hackney Canal, Pomeroon, is proud of her 42 years of service she has given to the Government. She spent 36 of those years, at Hackney Health Centre, where she served as a midwife.
Adopting the motto, “Do onto others as you would have done to you”, Nurse Norton explained that her career began at age 21. What was and still is her passion for her job, she said that from an early age she was fascinated with the care of babies and would usually escape from her parents’ home to go and be in the presence of babies.
Sharing one of her most memorable moments in her career, Nurse Norton said that in 1982, she was overwhelmed after she had delivered 21 babies in one month.
After retiring, Nurse Norton recalled that she was asked back on the job for five more years. “I am glad to go and I am not glad to go.”
Her advice to aspiring nurses is to be committed and love what you do. In presenting the token to her, Regional Chairman, Parmanand Persaud told Nurse Norton that her contributions are recognised by persons in the Pomeroon and along the Essequibo Coast.
Persaud added that while persons from Hackney will miss Nurse Norton’s service, she has the ability to continue her good work.
