Work on DHB’s western ramp begins May 26

From May 26, the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) will be closed to ocean-going vessels to accommodate the replacement of the structure’s western hydraulic ramp. The operation is expected to take four days.
The hydraulic ramp is the section of the retractor span that lifts off the acceptor span, allowing the bridge to retract, facilitating the passage of large ocean-going vessels.
The bridge will be opened to vehicular traffic, which will be facilitated in one-lane at the retractor span. Equipment in excess of 2.9 metres wide and heavy duty vehicles over 22.5 tons will not be allowed to transit the bridge.
While the hydraulic ramp is being changed by the contractor, InFab, staff of the DHB will change the bridge’s deck plates.
Recently, management of the structure changed the eastern hydraulic ramp. The bridge grasped the opportunity to change over 40 deck plates that were beneath the ramp. That operation was completed within three days and prudent planning was attributed for that success. It was scheduled to conclude in six days.
