Trini teen murder…Fugitive, victim started secret relationship two years ago

Guyanese murder suspect Ramesh Sookram and his Trinidadian ex-girlfriend Nikita Ramischand started

a secret relationship some two years ago, sources close to both families confirmed yesterday.
Trinidad media have quoted family members of Ramischand’s as saying that the two met about three months ago when Ramischand’s father hired Sookram and other construction workers to renovate the family’s property.
But last Thursday, Sookram’s mother, Dhanwattie Sookram, revealed that her son and his ex-girlfriend met each other some two years ago. At the time, Nikita was 16.
Ms. Sookram explained that Ramesh had been living in Trinidad for three years, and around 2010, he informed her that he was in love with a girl in Trinidad.
According to Ms. Sookram, Nikita contacted her by telephone and the two also met when the teen visited Guyana about two years ago.
“I meet her in Guyana year before last… we had lunch together and she tell me she like my son to marry.”
Kaieteur News was told that the two concealed the relationship from Nikita’s father, Trinidad-based attorney Odai Ramischand. Only one woman from Ramischand’s family may have known that the two were friends.
Media reports out of Trinidad suggest that things soured when Nikita rejected Ramesh’s marriage proposal, and the suspect might have become more incensed when his ex-girlfriend started another relationship.
Twenty-five year old Sookram, called ‘Alvin,’ is the prime suspect in the murder of his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend, whose mutilated body was found near her home in Maracas, Trinidad on April 25 last. He is still to be captured.
Local police have confirmed that Sookram fled to Guyana the day after Ramischand was slain, and his mother has also admitted that he visited her Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara home that same day. The teen had reportedly been boarding with the suspect in Trinidad.
Kaieteur News also confirmed that the fugitive was accompanied by his 16-year-old cousin, Anil Persaud. The cousin’s mother told Kaieteur News yesterday that her son was at her Soesdyke home from Thursday, April 26 to April 30. According to the woman, the lad left the home on Tuesday, May Day, after a quarrel with his step-father over the killing in Trinidad. She says she has not heard from the lad since.
According to Anil Persaud’s mother, her son denied any involvement in Ramischand’s murder, and claimed that he was at home (in Trinidad) at the time.
“He say that his cousin (the murder suspect) say that he was coming home (to Guyana), so he (her son) came too because he had nowhere to stay.”
The woman said that police visited her home to enquire about her son’s whereabouts. She said that she gave the police her son’s passport. She has promised to assist the police in locating her son.
“I will cooperate with them…my husband is an ex-policeman and he has promised to turn my son in.”
Like Anil’s mother, Dhanwattie Sookram insists that she knows nothing about her son’s whereabouts.
She told Kaieteur News that Ramesh telephoned her at around 23:00 hrs on Wednesday April 25, and said that he was coming home.
He then turned up at her home the following day at around 09:00 hrs. While media reports out of Trinidad suggested that security cameras at the Piarco International Airport showed the suspect with a bandaged hand, Sookram’s mother said that he had no injuries. The woman alleged that Ramesh did not appear to be nervous and said nothing about the murder in Trinidad.
Kaieteur News was told that Ramesh borrowed his mother’s phone to make a call. He reportedly left with the phone and never returned. Ms. Sookram claims she last heard from her son on Friday, April 27, when he called her home.
She said that police and persons in civilian clothing have twice searched her home and those of her two other sons. Mrs. Sookram and her husband also alleged that heavily-armed men threatened her family and kicked and gun-butted one of her sons last Thursday.
According to the woman, the men had given her up to yesterday to produce the suspect.
Mrs. Sookram also said that police had checked at her relatives at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara after receiving reports that he might be hiding out at an aunt’s home.
